Update – Alexander Road ADA Repairs Project

The Township has received calls about the Pedestrian Safety project underway on Alexander Road, between Wallace Road and Nash Park.  Specifically, at Alexander and Scott why is the new curb at the crosswalks "too high"? Where are the sidewalk depressions?

Central to this project is the creation of a raised intersection at the location of Scott Ave and Alexander as a traffic calming measure.  A raised intersection is a recognized pedestrian safety countermeasure as they reduce vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian visibility.

Construction involves providing ramps in the road on each intersection approach and elevating the entire intersection several inches to the level of the sidewalk. The crosswalks on each approach are also elevated as a part of the treatment, to enable pedestrians to cross the road at the same level as the sidewalk. That is why the new curb installed is currently not recessed and appears to be incorrect.

Once the road is milled and paved to the higher elevation (higher in the intersection only) the curb will be at the right height for ease of crossing.  A portion of the site plan and a concept rendering of the raised intersection are provided. The Contractor is currently scheduled to mill and pave the week of August 2nd, weather permitting

Improvements also include along this corridor ADA-compliant accessible ramps, drainage, milling and overlay of portions of the roadway, installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB), and other incidental work.  Thank you for your attention and patience.

Please continue to honor all temporary traffic control measures for your safety and the safety of others.
