COVID-19 Update – Tuesday April 28th, 2020
Today we got a mixed message in the form of 5 new positive test results for COVID-19 while six people were cleared and out of isolation. That brings our total positive COVID cases to 142 of which 60 have recovered.
As some of you may know Governor Murphy today signed an executive order allowing the townships to extend grace period for tax payment from May 11th to June 1st. A few of you have asked whether West Windsor will be extending the grace period. I wish the Governor had acted earlier to give townships more time to plan. The extension needs a resolution from the council. The next council meeting is scheduled on May 11th after the current tax payment deadline.
I understand many people have lost their jobs and are hurting. These people can use the extension if granted. If you are one of the lucky ones who doesn’t need the extension please pay your taxes on time, that will make the decision to extend a little easier.
Let me explain the dilemma. Although the Governor has allowed an extension of the grace period, the township is still required to pay the school district and the county their share of taxes in a timely manner. The township collects only 15% of the property taxes while the majority of the remaining 85% goes to the school district and the county. If an extension is granted the township is required to support cash flow for 85% out of its share of 15% taxes. More people paying on time will help reduce the township’s outlay to the school district and county and make that decision easier.

Please stay safe and have a wonderful over the hump day.
