Planning for a sustainable age West Windsor
The West Windsor Township Planning Board and Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh announced that the West Windsor Township Planning Board will be conducting a public hearing to adopt a new Sustainability Element for the West Windsor Township Master Plan on October 14, 2009 at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be conducted at the West Windsor Township Municipal Building.
The Sustainability Element offers a wide-ranging blueprint of goals, objectives, strategies, and targets to direct Township operations toward more sustainable practices. A more sustainable West Windsor will balance the environmental, economic, and social consequences of our actions. Stewardship of resources to bestow future generations with an opportunity to live in a healthy and safe environment can be achieved by employing more sustainable and prudent practices today.
Mayor Hsueh stated, “Sustainability is a more responsible way to ensure a healthy environment for future generations. By conducting a balanced analysis of our actions, we can conserve our environmental resources; enhance the social connections of our community; and make the expenditure of funds and labor more efficient. Sustainability will be our generation’s legacy.”
The Sustainability Element is a direct result of the Sustainable West Windsor Plan that was developed by the Environmental Commission and presented to the Township in August of 2007. Since 2007, the Planning Board, Environmental Commission and Administration have initiated some of the actions described in the plan and the State enacted legislation to allow municipalities to adopt a Master Plan Sustainability Element. The Planning Board has been working with applicants for land use projects to integrate “green” or more sustainable building practices into private development within the community. This has included: employment of more efficient building systems; renewable energy systems; sustainable materials management; stormwater management to improve water quality; mass transit and smart pedestrian and bicycle appropriate planning. Adoption of the Sustainability Element will build upon and guide extension of these efforts.
