West Windsor Township Mercer County Park to Host 2009
            WALK4HEARING

The Hearing Loss Association of America, New Jersey State Affiliate has scheduled its GARDEN STATE NJ WALK4HEARING for October 17, 2009, 9 a.m. at the Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The WALK4HEARING is a nationally coordinated effort, sponsored by the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), held to raise funds for the support of all with any form of hearing loss and also to increase awareness about the causes and consequences of hearing loss.

Ever since its creation in 2006, WALK4HEARING, a 5K (3.2 miles) series of walks held in over 20 locations across America, has brought in excess of one million dollars, and acts as a fast-growing, highly productive flagship event of the HLAA. Thousands of dedicated individuals, of different ethnicity, age, and background, participate each year, collecting their efforts in an attempt to make hearing loss a public health issue.

Hearing loss can caused by excessively loud noise, illnesses, medications, aging, injury, birth defects, or genetic factors. It affects a child's ability to acquire a spoken language, a student's ability to get an education, a worker's productivity in the workplace, and a senior person's wellbeing in social, medical, religious and other environments. It is estimated that 31.5 million Americans have been afflicted with some form of hearing loss, with the number in New Jersey being close to 800,000 persons.

In last year’s event, also held in the Mercer County Park, West Windsor Township Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh cut the ribbon, and walked the entire length of the trail along with the event participants. The event generated over $57,000, almost $30,000 more than the original goal, with all proceeds going towards providing scholarships to hard of hearing students, expanding outreach by supporting New Jersey HLAA chapters, and supporting the National HLAA office in advocacy and legislative initiatives.

In addition to the WALK4HEARING event, the HLAA also sponsors a Walk Kickoff Event that will be held on September 13th, 2009, at the Montclair State University Conference Center. The Kickoff acts not only as a preliminary gathering for confirmed and likely supporters for the Walk, but also serves to motivate and encourage the maximum number of people to participate in the Walk.

Local area businesses are given the opportunity to become sponsors for the WALK4HEARING. Sponsors are given prominent display of their respective logos on the Walk website and Walk signage along the Walk route. All sponsorships and donors will be acknowledged. The Hearing Loss Association, New Jersey State Affiliate is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, and all contributions are tax-deductible.

All individuals, families, friends and businesses wanting to make a difference may inquire into the Walk by visiting the WALK4HEARING website, at www.Walk4Hearing.com.
