West Windsor Township - Amtrak work to begin

On or about April 23, Amtrak will begin improvements to catenary system along the Northeast Corridor rail tracks.

The NJ High Speed Rail Program is an FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) Grant funded Program to improve the existing catenary system, power distribution, track and signal system on the Northeast Corridor between Trenton and New Brunswick to facilitate increased speeds and improved reliability.

As part of the catenary upgrade portion of the Program, new catenary structures are being installed along the right-of-way.  Within the Princeton Junction Station the Program will be installing the foundations and poles for these structures as circled in the attached map.  This work will occur during overnight shifts to minimize the impact to the station passengers over a period of 3-4 weeks for the completion on both sides of the right-of-way.  The foundations are approximately 4' diameter and 20'-25' in depth and are drilled with a rig approximately 10' wide.  Amtrak completes a soft dig in the location of the foundation prior to the contractor commencing the drilling activities.  The material removed with the drill rig will be removed from the site. The Program has been discussed with the West Windsor Parking Authority regarding the temporary use of parking spaces for staging and access to each work site.  The Program has also been in contact with the Greater Mercer TMA to temporarily relocate two sets of the bike lockers in the eastern lot on the track #1 side. This work outlines the installation of the catenary foundations.  The poles will be installed at a later date which will again be overnight work and will be coordinated.

We do not anticipate an increase in the use of train horns because we will not be working "On-Track.”  By rule, trains must sound their horns when they are, "Approaching Roadway Workers or their equipment on or near the track."  All of the scheduled work is due to take place behind the platforms
