On or about Monday, March 18th, the replacement of the County Route 571 Bridge over Big Bear Brook will begin
Mercer County has announced that construction activities for the replacement of County Bridge #762.7 on Princeton-Hightstown Road (County Route 571), located just south of the Lanwin Boulevard and Rabbit Hill Road traffic signal, will begin on or about Monday, March 18, 2013. Construction will be staged so that one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction, i.e., County Route 571 will be reduced from a 4-lane road to a 2-lane road in the area of the bridge construction. Again, Route 571 will be reduced from two travel lanes in each direction to one travel lane in each direction. Once this restriction is put in place, this will be an around-the-clock restriction for the duration of the project. Considerable delays are to be expected. Planning of alternate routes is recommended.
Replacement of this bridge over the Big Bear Brook is necessary due to substantial deterioration of the critical bridge structure members and the poor deck condition. Furthermore, environmental permit constraints require commencement of the project at this time since no work is permitted in the stream between May 1 and June 30. Upon completion of the project, the bridge will accommodate 4 lanes of traffic, with shoulders, as well as sections of sidewalk on both sides of the bridge.
The contract duration for this project will be approximately 270 days (9 months), weather permitting, due to the time of year and the inability to completely close the road. The anticipated work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7 AM until 4 PM, and Saturdays 8 AM until 4 PM.
Please honor any posted traffic control devices for your own safety and the safety of others.
